This Is Getting Ridiculous!!
… but I don’t really mind at all. But this evening, Colin beat me in the brown trout catching department. Truth be told, the fishing was slow for everyone on the river – but Colin did catch one pretty brown trout – he says it was about 14″. I didn’t get a close look at it – but you know what they say about the angler’s ruler ;).
It was a great evening nonetheless. Colin and I met up with Ken Chandler, a guide out of Mount Forest who guides on the Grand and Saugeen River waters as well as providing fly fishing instruction. A very nice man, very knowledgable, and helpful.
For regular fly anglers of the Grand, they’ll probably be familiar with what is called the “Blondie’s Entrance.” That is where we headed this evening to meet with Ken. I’d never fished this section of the Grand before so it was great to have Ken along for that reason as well.
The browns were rising to spinners – but it was not fast and furious action. But there were some big bruisers out there – at one point, a very large brown cruised right into the shallows, and came within ten feet of me while turning over and engulfing about 15 spinners (note, for non fly anglers, we’re NOT talking about spinner lures! - We’re talking about dead mayflies). Full of nutrition even though they are dead, trout love spinners.
I did have one large trout rise to my spinner immitation offering (which was provided with my sincere thanks by Ken Chandler), as we were getting ready to leave after dark. But that was about the sum total of my action today.
So yeah, now I’m even being outfished by Colin! I have to admit, I really don’t mind at all though. For me, it is just awesome to have this opportunity to introduce him to a sport that I love, and watch him learn, enjoy, and we can laugh together when either one of us tangles lines, or … ends up with one of their waders filled with water, right Colin? 😉
If Colin keeps this up though, he is going to become one awesome fly angler. He’s already learned a lot, is not afraid of experimenting and trying different things, and asks great questions. Some that I don’t know the answer to, so I’m learning new things as well.
Not sure if I will have to take him home tomorrow or not – if so, I’m going to really miss him but will have some great memories until the next time he is able to come down and share some time with me on a river. If we can swing an extra day though, we’ll likely be back chasing browns, chub, or whatever else will take our fly.

Yeah, that was a lot of fun! I caught the first fish. Haha! And it was a nice trout too. We should go back to that same spot and try again some time if I don’t say up another day.
