No Fishing Today
The weather continues to be weird here. Humidity abounds, and the day had periods of sunshine, and then periods of thunder storms. I didn’t get out fishing, but I did get to Bass Pro Shops where I picked up something I’ve always wanted. A Lodge cast iron “Sportsman’s Grill.” Many of my friends know that I love cooking with cast iron – skillets and dutch ovens, and I also wanted a new portable barbeque that used charcoal. When I saw that Lodge made one out of cast iron, it’s been on my list of things to acquire. Much better quality than the hibachis I used to have.
I didn’t know they were available in Canada until I discovered last week that Bass Pro Shops carried them, but at the time, they were out of stock. When I found out that three of them had come into the store, I took David down with me. Now I’m looking forward to doing some grilling on that barbeque – perhaps some rainbow trout!
I posted a quick review of the el cheapo Martin Caddis Creek fly reel that I figured would do David. You might recall I bought him a rod and reel for his 7th birthday which was on the 6th of August. Years ago, I owned at least one inexpensive Martin fly reel, and it did the job for what I wanted at the time.
Interested in if this reel that is billed as a “serious reels that will more than hold their own against the most stubborn fish” is as billed? I’ve posted the review here. I’ll publish a review of the Snowbee Classic Junior rod at some point in the future too.
As well as the Lodge grill, I picked up a few other odds and ends at Bass Pro Shop. It was nice to see my friend Brian Vickery again, who works in their fly shop. Always a great guy to talk to and very knowledgeable about the product the shop carries. Brian also does a lot of work at a hatchery, volunteering his time in order to raise Atlantic Salmon and Brown Trout that get put in a local river – the Humber I believe it is.
I’ve got an invite to The Franklin Club this week, and was told to bring along a 5 wt. rod with slow sinking line. I have plenty of sinking lines for my heavier rods, but none for the 5 wts, and thought I’d try out the Rio Lake Aqualux, which is rated 1.5 inches per second. Faster than the Sixth Sense slow intermediate but slower than the other lines that were available.
Hopefully, I’ll be able to get out on the water tomorrow evening, and maybe even bring back a fish to grill!
