I Got “Talkie-Talkies!”
For David, my 4 year old son, Father’s Day was just taking far too long to arrive, apparently. And what an exciting Father’s Day present he had for me too!
For some time, I’ve been thinking of getting a half decent set of two way radios especially for use when I’m fishing with a friend on a river. Many times, one of us will head up or downstream, lost in our own exploration when one of us will find a honey hole but unable to communicate it to the other except by smoke signal or something. Time will pass as the hole is fished by one and we’ll wonder if by chance our angling partner will head up or down and find the other.
Well, today I was presented with a Uniden set of two way radios that have a range apparently of up to 6 miles. With 22 channels to choose from, they should work quite well for what I’d like. And of course provide hours of fun for David and Daddy on their new “talkie-talkies.” David has been laughing and giggling as we talk to each other from different parts of the house.
Perhaps tomorrow we’ll get to try them out somewhere else!

I was always quite sceptical of walky talkies – when my pal got some I thought he was just being gimmicky. I am however now a convert, they have proved there usefulness countless times. When the fishing is slow you can have plenty fun ïŠ
Alistair, thanks for the comment. Years ago, I was skeptical as well… as the units one could purchase 2 decades ago were cheap, and used “Citizen’s Band” radio channel 14 – and were useless over any kind of range one might end up being apart while fishing with a friend.
But as the better quality 2 way systems have come down in price, I’ve always wanted to get a set for those times when I split up from my friend, and want some way to let him know about a great new discovery on a stream – a pool that holds fish, when he’s gone off in a different direction.
Or even just to be in contact to ask, “Hey dude, is it coffee or lunch time yet?”
I’m looking forward to using my “talkie talkies” on the river soon!
[…] Earlier in the afternoon, I showed Colin how to tie up the Grand River fly, and we tied up some before we headed out for the river. After grabbing a bite to eat, we were on the river at about 5 PM with Colin deciding he was most definitely going to give his newly tied fly a go. I decided to try a different dry pattern. We also took along our “talkie talkies” so we could split up and still be able to communicate without having to holler at each other.
