“Daddy, Can I Tie A Fly?”
In the past, my son David who will be 4 in August, has sat on my knee while I’ve tied flies and helped trim material. Today, he decided he wanted to do more than trim material. At the same time, I’ve got an appointment with my 14 year old son to take him fly fishing on the Grand River this evening. So, I decided to get David up on my knee and tie up something simple and fast… or let David do his best to tie up something simple and fast.
While we were at work, someone was busy snapping a few pictures:
Dad Showing David how to start the thread on a hook. David badly wants to get at this job himself!
So here’s David, with his full attention on wrapping the thread on the hook.
David needed a little helping hand, but he didn’t mind at all. Don’t notice all the fly tying clutter on my desk. Presently, it doubles for both my full time work desk as well as for tying flies – it’s a great old solid oak desk with hand pull out surfaces that make for a great place to clamp a vice to.
The completed fly – white calf tail and red flashabou streamer with a tinsel body. Shall we use this fly to go fishing with? Naw.. I don’t think so… not this first one:
We’re going to hold onto this one and save it in the “memory box.” Dated and signed. I’ll get David to write his own name on the piece of paper later, as well.
Now I have to run! Colin is waiting for me to take him to the Grand River to see if we can catch ourselves some brown trout! Hopefully, I’ll have good things to report later on that.
I can certainly relate, I have two boys, 2 and 4 years old. The four year old always asks me to tie flies for him. He has not tied one himself yet, but he generally picks the one to tie for me from a book. Trouble is that my arms are not long enough tie with both sitting on my lap and my arms wrapped around.
Hey Dennis, thanks for your comment. Two sons, 4 and under – sounds like you’ve got some great fun in your future! I’ve got four sons all together – oldest 18, youngest will be 4 in August.
I don’t have a solution for you regarding the “not long enough arms” problem! 🙂
