Bring Back The Salmon
It may surprise some folk to read that at one time, Lake Ontario was probably the best Atlantic Salmon lake in the entire world. In the 19th century, there were reports of so many Atlantic Salmon heading up L. Ontario tributaries that catches of hundreds in one night were not uncommon. Farmers would even use pitch forks to pull salmon from the rivers for their table.
Today, Atlantic Salmon, an indigenous species to Ontario are not quite non-existent – thanks to some who have been involved in hatchery services and releasing Atlantics into L. Ontario tribs in recent years.
On May 15th, students from Belfountain Public School in Ontario will be releasing their own hatchery Atlantics into the upper Credit River.
More information on this here. Apparently, volunteers who can assist with both the release of the Atlantics and tree planting along the Credit are more than welcome.
