Another Nice Evening
I was rushing to get some work done so that I could get in some fly fishing this evening, even if only for 90 minutes. I ended up fishing about 90 minutes. The water level was quite high with all the rain we’ve been getting. Yesterday, my area had tornado warnings for the afternoon and into the evening and several tornadoes did touch down about an hour north, and 45 minutes south-east, causing considerable destruction. Yesterday twas definitely not fly fishing weather!
When I arrived, there was a group from McMaster University who are involved in fish research and study. One of them, Darren had brought along his wee son Luke. Luke was a cute little guy and was fascinated with my flies, casting a fly rod, and why I had “really thin line attached to the thicker line.” I spoke with Luke and Darren for some time and was very interested in what Darren did, and was charmed with little Luke’s intelligent questions and excitement to watch someone fly fishing.
Darren and Luke returned to their barbecue and left me to fish. I had decided to use the Viva Zonker again, and about 15 minutes later, fish on! I knew that Luke would want to see it, so I hollered over to where they were, and Luke and his dad came scampering over. It was fun to see the excitement and interest in the little guy’s eyes and expressions. I think Darren has a very interested angler on his hands! If you’re reading this, Darren – shoot me an email and we’ll get Luke out sometime, perhaps with my son David.
That fish was about 17″ and was the only action I’d see until almost dark. The Zonker didn’t seem to be interesting enough to the other fish, so I tried a variety of other patterns. Finally, I noticed some trout rising as it was getting dark to some small midges or something, and decided to try this chironomid pattern that I’ve had success with at times.
Took me forever to tie the fly on though – I had forgotten my glasses, again! Once I had the fly on, several casts made in the direction of the fish that were rising from time to time. I fished it very slowly, and as I was thinking about giving up for the evening, another fish on! This one about 15″ brought to the net. The mosquitoes were taking their quart of blood by then and I was happy to have had the two fish I did and decided to pack up.
While at my car, Luke came running over to thank me for calling him down to the pond to see the fish. I thought that was very nice of the young boy – his father had not told him to thank me and he was quite pleased with his son. I should have thought to give Luke one of the flies I was using, but didn’t think of it until after I had left. Perhaps I’ll see him again sometime.
