I don't know about you, but I tend to daydream a lot. Even when I was a little boy, I can remember being 'awakened' from a daydream by a teacher or one of my parents. Many of my thoughts were on fishing, catching huge fish, or thinking about what tackle I wanted someone to buy me. Now a days, I still daydream about fishing, but my thoughts have expanded to including exotic locations I would love to fly fish.

At this time of year, many of us are beginning to think about Christmas time. For some, it could be a holiday that includes travel and time to get away from hustle and bustle. Wouldn't it be wonderful to incorporate fly fishing at Christmas? How about Christmas Island?

Which Christmas Island? There are at least two islands in the Pacific Rim that bear the name Christmas, and both offer fantastic fishing opportunities. One is north of the Equator, while the other is south. Both have constant temperatures of about 80 degrees throughout the year, and Christmas is a great time to visit. Both islands use Australian currency.

Christmas Island located in the Republic of Kiribati is about a 3 hour flight from Honolulu and was discovered by Captain Cook. This island offers tremendous bonefish on the fly. Forbes Magazine provided an article describing the exciting bonefish oppportunities available around Christmas Island, Kirbati. From what has been written, it appears that bonefish abound throughout the flats of this Island and fishing for them can provide a thrilling experience for any fly angler.

There are several outfitters that can offer everything you need to fly for bonefish. For the uninitiated, these fish are not considered good table food, but offer tremendous sport. They can reach speeds of up to 20 miles per hour with their sleek bodies, and catching 20 per day is not an unreasonable expectation while wading the flats.

Located in the Village of London, the Mini-Hotel Kiritimati offers comfortable accomodations as well as provide experienced guides for the fishing that is only steps away.

Mayfly Fishing Travel in Australia can also provide information about their guiding and outfitting services on Christmas Island. Be sure to visit their page just for a glimpse at the beautiful flats you can fish as well as the bonefish they contain.

The well known author, Randall Kaufmann recommends Christmas Island for its tremendous angling, and his company, Kaufmann's Streamborn Inc., provides their own Christmas Island expedition. They claim that Christmas Island is an ideal location for the beginning fly angler due to the sheer numbers of fish that are available to be caught.

Western River Flyfisher offers their own package deal and as well as providing Bonefishing, Jack and Trevally are also emphasized, although you will want heavier tackle if you're after these!

You may also want to consider the hotel named for the discoverer of the island, Captain Cook Hotel, where a room with electricity costs a little more.

Before you head off to this Christmas Island, you will certainly want to take a look at these Bonefishing Tips from Al Caucci.

The other Christmas Island was discovered by Captain Mynors on Christmas Day in 1643. At the time, it was completely uninhabited, but was found to have large deposits of phosphate. Eventually, these deposits were mined, and the island became home to a new native population.

An Australian territory, the island is located about 4 hours flying time from Perth, or about 2 hours from Singapore. Big game fish are the attraction here, with a world record Dogtooth Tuna recently caught in the waters around the island. As well, Sailfish and Wahoo abound. Shorefire Charters, the longest operating charter company can provide everything you need for whatever species of fish you are after, although fly fishing is not emphasized.

If you do plan on fishing Christmas Island(s), make sure the travel agent knows which one you have in mind!
