Three very important flies if you're a bass angler.

I really owe an awful lot to Ian James for my fly fishing knowledge. I first met Ian about 15 years ago at a small 'Home Show' in Newmarket, Ontario. Ian had a tiny booth where he was displaying his wonderfully tied flies and artwork, and was tying up fly ear rings which many of those in attendance at the show adored.

I don't believe Ian ties up ear rings much anymore, but there is a great demand for his fly hat pins, also used as brooch pins. Ian is a very creative fly tyer, and considering the fact that he is colour blind, I have nothing but awe for his fly tying abilities. In 1990, Ian won an Ontario Arts Council Award for Creativity and Design for one of his framed Atlantic Salmon Flies. He has also been featured in a number of magazines and fishing publications throughout North America and the U.K. In 1995, he participated on the Canadian team during the World Fly Fishing Championships held in Galway, Ireland.

Needless to say, I'm very honoured that I am able to count Ian as one of my friends. Flyfishing with him is a joy; not only do I learn something, but Ian is a very funny man and his sense of humour always brings a chuckle or three.

On a recent fishing trip with Ian, where our quarry was smallmouth bass (and we also hooked into some nice carp as well!), there were a few flies that produced very very well. Ian highly recommends these three flies for anyone seeking the thrill of hooking smallmouth or largemouth bass, and the nice thing is that all three flies work for a variety of other species as well.

Ian's bread and butter comes from guiding clients and tying flies for others, but he agreed to share these flies and their patterns with you. So, if you're not a fly tier, send Ian an email or visit his site and see what you can work out with him! I can tell you that you will certainly want to give these flies a try! Without further ado:
